Idioms

Idioms are expressions that do not make literal sense. Sometimes idiomatic phrases break grammatical rules. Native English speakers often use such words and phrases. Here is a partial list of idioms: more will be added weekly, so check back often!

Phase:
Meaning:
give way to retreat
look forward to to anticipate
look out

be on guard

look down on regard negatively, with contempt
catch a cold to become ill
break a leg have good luck
head in the clouds to be unrealistic
differ from to be unalike
Here are two phrases concerning time:

Use at when referring to a specific hour - -I will be there at 8:45.

But use in when referring to a year: He graduated in 1986.
